Just wanted to share this thought with the caretakers of people who are not keeping too well for quite some time now.
It is very important to provide emotional support to your family member who needs it most at such trying times; but, it is equally important to make them emotionally independent too. So, what do I mean by making them "emotionally independent?'
With terminal illness comes a long list of other concerns that may take a toll on your beloved's mental, emotional and spiritual health. They depend upon you for many things. And you oblige because he/she is a beloved one. But slowly this starts taking a toll on your health too. Your life becomes just helping the person in all possible ways without giving a thought to your own health. After a while you begin feeling irritable, tired, nervous and many times depression seeps in.
I have come across a few patients who scream at the top of their voices on their kith and kin for simple things like he/she did not call at lunch time, or was not at home when the doctor visited.
I know how difficult it is to keep up with the same kind of energy day in and day out.
- Try to teach your beloved one how to do small things on their own.
- Encourage them to read, listen to music, plan their day apart from their medical routine.
- Maintaining a written or oral journal of their thoughts will empower them.
These little things help people a long way making them emotionally strong and they become more self dependent.
